The Tribe of Rushing Water

Eagle sat up and looked around the quiet cave. The only sound was the light squeaking of kits as they played. The tribal cats were just settling down and the sun was slowly sinking beneath the mountain peaks. The skinny brown tabby tom stretched his legs and slowly slid his claws out of his snow white paws. Knowing that it would soon be completely quiet, Eagle sank back down to the cave floor to wait and decided to rest his eyes for just a moment.

The lithe tom woke to the sound of a hawk screeching as it dove for prey. I bet I'll be the first to take a hunting group out, he thought, looking around for someone to go with. But no one seemed to have waken as early as him. Usual, he thought, licking his ruffled fur. The other prey-hunters still slept in their nests, as if they knew that the prey wouldn't be out at all until later when the late autumn sun started to warm the cold mountain rocks. Eagle padded toward the front of the cave and sat down. "Well, then I'll wait," he said to himself, his gray eyes scanning the horizon.
