Nari crouched, her whiskers twitching with satisfaction. The stupid rat still had no idea that she was there. She rushed forward in a hunting maneuver that would have won no prizes, but was enough to grasp the furry creature between her forepaws.

But its end couldn't come too quickly. Nari loved to play with the prey before killing it. She flipped the rat into the air and heard a squeak as it hit the packed dirt. Before it could recover its wits, Nari was on it again, flinging it to the other end of the alley.

Licking her lips with pleasure and hunger, Nari finished it with a vicious shredding of its throat. As she gulped her meal, she glanced up and down the alley. One could not be too careful, but even if conflict did come, Nari felt pretty sure she could handle it.

At first glance, Nari didn't really appear threatening. She was smaller than most, with narrow, slender limbs and a long, rather elegant-looking face. Her paws were small and she walked delicately. However, if one looked closer, the rippling muscles in her shoulders became visible. Her haunches were broad and nearly always tensed, ready to fight if some cat flew at her.

Nari narrowed her piercing blue eyes, trying to rub dust and dirt from her sleek black pelt. Now she just needed to find somewhere safe to sleep. Easier said than done, the she-cat thought ruefully.

Owl watched, disgusted, as Nari leaped at her rat. That could have been timed better, he thought. Like most Bloodclan cats, Owl never killed his prey right away, but when he did finally finish it off, he made sure the blow was well aimed and tactful. Owl knew most of the other cats by name but he interacted with few of them, and spent time with even fewer. As Nari munched on the rat's body, Owl slipped behind some stacked crates, closer to where the black she-cat crouched at the other end of the alley. He lifted his long legs high, making sure they didn't brush the ground. His light brown pelt was splattered with mud, making his darker brown flecks camouflaged under the slimy mess. Owl crouched behind a metal board that was leaned against the wall and watched as Nari rubbed dirt from her fur. Owl stealthily attempted to creep closer, but his short, stubby tail hit the metal board, sending a loud, echoing sound through the alley. Nari pricked her ears and Owl braced himself for an attack.

Nari didn't think anybody was in the alley with her, but then she heard a loud, metallic clang. Her ears pricked and she whipped around, curling her lip in a snarl.
"Nice stealth attack," she hissed scornfully, unsheathing her claws and flexing her shoulder muscles. In the shadows, she thought she could make out flashes of Owl's specked brown fur between matted patches of mud.

Owl suppressed a hiss of frustration. There's no point in hiding now, he told himself. Silent as shadows, he slipped out for behind the metal board, into the open alleyway. "Hello... Nari is it?," he began, his voice cool and innocent. "I was just out looking for somewhere to spend the night. You wouldn't happen to know a place would you?"

As he spoke he began to search for any possible weaknesses. Nari was small but very strong, and could easily deal out a number of hard blows during a fight, but Owl was fast; his long, spider-like legs carried him swiftly over the ground and he was sure he could outrun this opponent. Nari was up against the wall of the alley while Owl was in the open, an easy escape route onto the city streets. But Nari was selfish and cruel, and she probably wouldn't give chase anyway. I guess i'll see where this conversation goes. Maybe she actually will help me. But if things get bad i'll make a break for it, he thought. Owl wasn't especially good at fighting, so he wasn't about to take any unnecessary risks.

Nari sat back on her haunches, looked Owl over with a critical eye. She knew she was strong and could overpower him in a fight - that's if he didn't get away first. He could dodge under her defenses with his long, lightning-swift legs. Plus, Nari was cornered, while the other end of the alley lay behind Owl, giving him an easy escape route.

"A place to spend the night," Nari echoed, narrowing her icy eyes. "No, I don't happen to know of anywhere. I'm doing the same thing as you, and I haven't found anything yet," she replied briskly.

Owl's nose twitched in annoyance. Big help, he thought. He quickly leaped on top of a nearby wooden crate and sat down. "Well any place is as good as the next in this crummy city," he mewed, not bothering to cover up the dislike in his tone. Suddenly, a flash of blue caught his eye. He glanced over his shoulder at a musty piece of cloth that looked like it had been throw out by twolegs. My lucky day, he thought with a smirk. Carefully, he dragged the cloth over to where he was sitting. Guess this'll work, He told himself. He sat back down, grateful for the small amount of warmth the ragged twoleg thing offered. "Looks like this is gonna be my home for the night," he said aloud. He looked down on Nari from his perch, raising his chin to the black she-cat and wondering what she would do.

Nari raised her snout, gazing at Owl. "I see you like to look down on others." She paused with a chuckle. "Of course, I do too, so I suppose I shouldn't be talking." She gave Owl a calculating glance, wondering if she should go and find another place to sleep.

Owl snickered and looked away, feeling a little amused. In truth, he really didn't care if Nari slept here or not, so long as she didn't invade his sleeping place. He curled in a tight ball, letting one long leg hang comfortably off the side of the crate. He closed his dark green eyes but kept his ears open, alert for any noise that would give away Nari's position.

Nari crept towards the shadows, the darkness hiding her black pelt until she was nearly invisible. She supposed she could kill Owl, but there was no reason to. He didn't have any prey, and she didn't want his sleeping spot.

Instead, Nari stared up at the brick wall confronting her. It would be a hard climb, but her mother had taught her how to scale walls with seemingly no pawholds. She hooked her foreclaws into the tiny gaps in the stone, hauling herself upward and fixing her hind claws in the grout. It took a while; she had to make sure her claws were thoroughly hooked in the holes before she took a step up. Finally, though, she hauled herself onto the roof of the Twoleg den. From there, she scanned the alleys, looking for a suitable place to sleep.

Owl watched with one eye open as Nari clawed her way up the stone wall. At least now I can sleep in peace, he thought. Tomorrow he planed to pay a visit to a pretty pale gray she-cat, Bella, who was always willing to offer help to him in any way possible. But Owl didn't want to take advantage of her generosity, he simply wanted the company of a friend, the only true friend he had. He closed his eye as Nari disappeared onto the twoleg roof and slowly drifted into a anxious sleep.

Nari spotted a small alcove made by stacked trashcans. It was the perfect sleeping spot - sheltered, hard to attack, and well-hidden. Tensing her muscles, she leapt from the roof onto a heap of cardboard boxes and wove her way through the alleys of Twolegplace until she stood before the trashcans.

Squinting into the shadows, Nari realized that there was a cat already sheltering beneath the lids. "Get out, you mangy scrap of fur," she hissed, arching her back and unsheathing her claws.

The cat stared at her, its wide, terrified amber eyes unblinking.

"Go on, get," Nari spat. "Or my claws will give you something to think about."

Instantly the scrawny cat shot out from the trashcans. Nari noticed that he was incredibly underfed, and a few old scars marred his mangy fur. He was a complete mess. He obviously didn't truly know how to survive in BloodClan. Nari would've been willing to bet anything that he would be dead before the next few sunrises.

She curled up in her shelter and fell asleep almost instantly.

Owl's dark green eyes flickered open as gray dawn light poured into the dirty alleyway. He slowly stood up, stretching each long leg in turn. Lets see if I can't scrounge up some breakfast, he thought. He leaped from his perch atop the crates and padded out of the alley. The street was already roaring with monsters and twolegs and alive with the sound of their crying kits.

A few Bloodclan cats prowled around the corner in front of Owl, jaws stuffed with mice. Owl smirked. He had met this lot before. They were strong and tough but more stupid than pigeons. They would easy prey. He lifted his chin and called out to the leader, who called himself Killer, but who's real name was Stormy. The muscular gray tabby tom sniffed disdainfully and strutted up to him. "What you want runt?," he growled. Owl looked at their prey thoughtfully. "Where'd ya find those mice," he asked. One of Killer's followers hissed, "Don't tell him boss." But Killer just sneered. "Why? He won't be able to catch one even if I do. We caught'em at the dump up on Elm." Owl let out a terrified gasp. "You better hurry back up there. I just saw a group of newbies moving in on that territory," he told Killer. The gray tabby growled and dropped his prey. "That's my territory. Lets go boys!" He quickly raced back around the corner leaving his two companions trailing after him. Owl purred, staring at the three plump mice. Guess i'll have a decent meal after all.

Nari woke surprisingly refreshed. In BloodClan, you usually had trouble getting a good night's sleep. She stretched out her sore limbs and set out, looking for a place to hunt.

Soon, Nari came upon a large dump that was probably crawling with mice and rats, but a group of cats was already there. Nari recognized Killer, who she still thought of as Stormy, and his gang. She curled her lip with disdain. She wouldn't be hunting at the dump. Even she couldn't win a fight when she was this outnumbered. Part of being a cunning fighter, in Nari's mind, was picking your battles wisely. Why start a fight if you know you can't win?

She turned around at the scent of pigeon from a nearby trashcan. The bird was pecking at the lid, completely unaware of her presence. She dropped into a crouch and leapt, snapping its neck the way her mother had taught her back when she had lived in an alleyway closer to the more civilized part of Twolegplace. Hunting and finding shelter had been easier back then; there were less hostile cats and more space to negotiate a den.

But there was a long-running law in BloodClan that kits could only stay with their mothers for so long before being thrown out of the den. That was just how it was. If a family grew big enough, they could challenge BloodClan's authority. Nari hissed at the thought, biting into the pigeon. It was scrawny, but enough to tide her over until later.
