Critique vs. Being Rude: Know the Difference Empty Critique vs. Being Rude: Know the Difference

In the creativity forum, constructive criticism is encouraged. But how do you know when you've crossed the line into being rude and hating on other peoples' works?

A critique or constructive criticism is a helpful way of pointing out any flaws in a person's work. An example of a critique on somebody's art would be "Wow, nice job; I really like it! You might want to make the paws smaller and the ears less crooked, but otherwise it's a great piece!" That way, the artist knows how they can improve their work.

An example of the same comment put in hate form would be "I hate this artwork; it's so stupid. The paws are like swollen watermelons, and I have no idea what happened to the ears. I can draw ten times better than you." That is an insult to the artist's work; it's essentially an exaggerated and rude critique.

Remember, you shouldn't feel defensive of somebody offers some tips for your art or writing technique. Most likely, they have good intentions and are just trying to help you. However, if it is worded in an offensive or hateful way, either contact me or report the post. There's always room to improve, and it's very helpful when others help you. Don't turn down genuine offers to help out; they'll always turn up being useful in the long run.
