Here's why:
Spottedleaf seems to be the Mary Sue of Mary Sues. She is perfect, does everything perfect, and is attractive in the eyes of the hero of the story. Sort of like Mary Jane from Spiderman.

Anyway, yeah. And what do you know? She dies from protecting children. Maybe the Erins went a bit too far with the prospect of feminism. They created a character with a housemaid vibe that caught the attention of the great-destined Firestar. Doesn't that irk you?

i think that Spottedleaf was just fine. she is a great medicine cat, and told the prophecy of Firestar. If "fire alone can save our clan" i think that she was perfect.

In my opinion, Spottedleaf is another Celia (The Witch and the Wizard) and another lost love. Sure her planning could've been more thought out by the Erins, but I'm guessing her reserved attitude makes a lot of people second guess. The love between Firestar (or paw at the time) and her was a bit fast and unneeded, but she really did her clan good. Especially in the Last Hope
